Emails, social media and a recorded message stressed that the event would go on. The bulk of the event was reorganized and placed under tents. Then a miracle happened when the clouds parted and the sun peeked through.
Park guests of the two-legged and four-legged variety arrived to find that Old Oakland Neighbors, ODOG and Oakland Parks and Recreation had assembled community groups, organizations, individuals and local businesses. This included: 10,000 Steps Oakland, Garden Hortica, EBSPCA, EB Pet Sitter, MOCHA, FourSquare East Bay, Annalee Allen, Roy Byrd (former Harlem Globetrotter) and park basketball mentor Henry Boone. The pot luck was supplemented by warm food and drink by La Borinqueña Mex-icatessen and It’s a Grind Oakland.
A rededication and ribbon cutting ceremony highlighted the brand new dog play area, basketball court and tot lot by Councilmember Nancy Nadel, Oakland Parks & Rec Director Audree Taylor-Jones and Public Works Facilities Supervisor Lilly Soo Hoo capped the festivities. The renewed historic Jefferson Square Park is open for recreational activities and the park event committee, now called the park advisory committee, looks forward to seeing and meeting members of the community there everyday of the week.
